Until laws changed in 2021, it was essentially illegal to export natural-processed coffees from Kenya. The agriculture department—along with a small group of large corporations notoriously known as the “Coffee Cartel”—actively blocked direct trade in order to control pricing, manipulate supply, and maximize their profits.

In the world of community development, Bella Goose Roastery has often used high-value naturals as a way for farmers to improve the quality and value of their coffee without needing significant capital or infrastructure. But in Kenya, the Coffee Cartel had effectively suppressed that kind of innovation—until now.

During a visit in June, the Bella Goose Roastery team met a farmer who introduced himself as “Kanye West”—obviously not his real name. A mutual friend, who runs Torch Coffee in Nairobi, is working to export small batches of Kenyan naturals directly, bypassing the Coffee Cartel altogether.

The team was able to bring back 10 kg of these beans to roast at Bella Goose Roastery—and they are now featured as the Coffee of the Month for August 2025
